Elizabeth Robinson Knox Shaw, known to all of us as Betty Shaw, mother of our dear Nancy Shaheen, was born on December 18, 1924, in Glasgow, Scotland, to Jessie and Samuel Knox. She had an older sister Isabelle, and a younger brother, Robert. She immigrated to the United States with her mother and sister in 1929, and they united with Betty’s father in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she grew up.
Betty graduated from Kensington High School in 1943 and worked as a comptometer operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad. (If you don’t know what a comptometer is, you need to Google it or use this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comptometer. It’s really quite fascinating!). She met Jack Shaw in 1946, and they married August 30, 1947. Betty and Jack had four children: Nancy, John, Robert, and Maureen. She had 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter!!!
Betty was a loving inspiring mother and the consummate homemaker. She was active in the community as a Jaycee-ette, a school room mother, and PTA president/volunteer. She was a charter member of Christ United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch where she remained involved in Sunday School and women's groups. Betty was an alumnae initiate of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity International and an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Betty felt her greatest achievement, besides her family, was becoming a citizen of the United States in 1991. She loved that she could finally vote!
After raising her family, Betty worked in customer service for Horchow and Neiman Marcus. Her favorite job was being a fragrance model for various companies, working at Macy’s, Dillard’s, and Neiman Marcus. She was also an extra on the TV show Dallas.
Never has there been a more enthusiastic proponent for educators than Betty! She was a supporter of education and a cheerleader for teachers. Betty loved hosting our August Kappa Phi meetings in her home and was the ULTIMATE hostess. She had a way of making people feel at home and at ease. Kappa Phi installed Betty as an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma in 2015, and she has been a devoted member.
Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She loved people and got her energy from them. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was happiest when her family was together sharing memories and laughing! All who knew Betty know that she Lived! Laughed! Loved!
