In Memory of Carla Creighton McGee
April 29, 1936-February 14, 2011
We are mourning the death of our dear sister, Carla Creighton McGee, who passed away on February 14, 2011, after a long illness. Carla was born April 29, 1936, in Wichita Falls, Texas. We all will remember her beautiful voice, her lovely smile, her enthusiasm, her love of education, and her devotion to Delta Kappa Gamma.
Carla was a charter member of Kappa Phi Chapter and was our chapter president from 1980-1982. Judging from her many Delta Kappa Gamma accomplishments, she was definitely a member who never said “no” when Delta Kappa Gamma called. Carla was a Golden Gift participant in 1988, chairman of the Alpha State Professional Affairs Committee from 1994-1996, member of the Alpha State Program Committee from 1994-1996, and Leadership Seminar Chairman from 1997-1999. Carla was the First Vice President of Alpha State from 1995-1997, recipient of the Alpha State Achievement Award in 1994, and Area IX Coordinating Council Chairman from 1991-1993. Carla attended numerous conventions and sang in the chorus. She was an active member of Kappa Phi until her illness prevented her from attending meetings. Those of us who knew Carla will forever remember her voice leading us in singing our Delta Kappa Gamma Song.
Carla’s 27-year career in teaching began when she earned an Associate of Arts Degree from El Centro College while she and her husband Dan were raising four young children. Between cooking and ironing, she went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Speech & Drama from University of North Texas and then two Master’s degrees in Communication and Educational Administration. A passionate educator, she got her first teaching job in speech/drama at Highland Park High School in 1969, and then moved in 1973 to teach speech/drama at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton-Farmers Branch. In 1981, she became Assistant Principal at DeWitt Perry Middle School, and from 1984 to 1990, she served as Principal of R.L. Turner High School, where she was the first female principal of a 5A high school in Texas. In 1990, she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, where she supervised the curriculum. She also served as Principal at McCoy Elementary before retiring in 1996.
During her career, Carla received dozens of honors, including the Farmers Branch Woman of the Year Award, the Texas State Teachers Association’s Premier Principal Award, the Carrollton Professional Women’s Club’s Outstanding Woman of the Community Award, the University of North Texas Outstanding Alumni Award and the Rotary International Club’s Paul Harris Fellow Award. She also was elected to the board of the Dallas County Community College District.
We will all miss Carla, but we know she has been welcomed into Heaven and that her beautiful voice is raised in song with the choir of angels there.
